by John Perry Barlow
I woke today and felt your side of bed
The covers were still warm where you'd been laying
You were gone, my heart was filled with dread
You might not be sleeping here again
It's all right, I love you
That's not gonna change
Run me 'round, make me hurt again and again
But I'll still sing you love songs
Written in the letters of your name
And brave the storm to come
For it surely looks like rain
Did you ever waken to the sound of street cats making love
And guess from their cries you were listening to a fight
Well you know, hate's just the last thing they're thinking of
They're only trying to make it through the night
I only want to hold you, I don't want to tie you down
Or fence you in the lines I might have drawn
It's just that I have gotten used to having you around
My landscape would be empty if you were gone
It's all right, I love you
And that's not gonna change
Run me 'round, make me hurt again and again
But I'll still sing you love songs
Written in the letters of your name
And brave the storm to come
For it surely looks like rain

I met John Perry Barlow in person at a party in NYC in May of 2006, and was honored with the opportunity to tell him how much this song means to me. John Perry is one of the most genuine and gracious people I have ever encountered. I was able to explain to him later in an email how I believe that "Looks Like Rain" is one of the most honest, truthful, and toughest love songs ever written. I have heard some people call it overly sentimental, or brush it off as simple. But love is not simple or easy, and the "voice" in this song is clear, strong and able to embrace the pain that comes with any love worth having. The "street cats making love" verse says it all. John Perry responded to my email and also to another one I wrote to him. He is also a very brave person if any of you are tracking his work to keep the internet free. The internet seems like the last free place, but if what we write is being watched or recorded, then it's not so free after all. Anyone who fights for OUR freedom in this political climate is very brave as far as I'm concerned.
